Ukrainian Embroidery Parade Held at the Council of Europe
In Strasbourg, the Council of Europe hosted a parade of traditional Ukrainian embroidered clothes and an exhibition of early 20th century exhibits by ethnographer-collector Yuriy Melnychuk from the All-Ukrainian Centre of Embroidery and Carpet Weaving in Reshetylivka, Poltava region.
The cultural heritage of Ukraine was demonstrated during a session of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities, which adopted a resolution on the need to protect and restore Ukrainian cultural heritage, Ukrinform reports.
‘Vyshyvanka is not just clothing, it is a form of spiritual armour. Every intricate pattern, every stitch tells the story of struggle and survival. I want to express my deep gratitude to the wonderful Ukrainian craftsmen who preserve this craft,’ said Borys Tarasiuk, Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe, in his opening remarks.
The Ukrainian community also demonstrated embroidered shirts from Oksana Postupak's project ‘Shirt for a Defender’, and separately presented the national costumes of the Crimean Tatars. Craftsmen from the All-Ukrainian Embroidery Centre in Reshetylivka provided modern and authentic costumes from different regions of Ukraine.
The parade of embroideries was watched by the leadership of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, and was also attended by Ukrainian delegates to the Congress.
