Ukrainian Parliament Declares 1944–1951 Forced Relocations as Deportation

On July 16, Ukrainian Parliament, Verkhovna Rada passed a bill that recognizes Ukrainian citizens forcibly resettled from Poland in 1944-1951 as deportees.
The Gaze writes on this referring to Interfax-Ukraine.
A total of 284 deputies at the plenary session voted in favor of this bill (No. 2038) on amendments to certain laws regarding the recognition of deported citizens of Ukraine who were forcibly resettled from the territory of the Polish People's Republic in 1944-1951.
Therefore, the law expands the concept of “deportation” to include the forced resettlement of people of Ukrainian origin in 1944-1951 from their places of residence in Poland on the basis of decisions of the former USSR and the Polish People's Republic.
According to the law, the state guarantees persons of this category, and in the event of their death - their family members, the right to compensation for material and moral damage caused to them as a result of deportation in the form of a one-time financial assistance.
It is worth mentioning that in Ukraine, since 2019, the second Sunday of September marks the anniversary of the deportation of ethnic Ukrainians from Lemkivshchyna, Nadsyannia, Kholmshchyna, Southern Podlasie, Lubachivshchyna, and Western Boikivshchyna in 1944-1951.
The Gaze previously reported on the adoption of a joint historical statement by Poland and Ukraine on the exhumation of Volyn victims.
