77-Year-Old Slice of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip’s Wedding Cake Sold for Over £2,000 at UK Auction
A piece of fruit cake from the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1947 was sold at auction in the UK. The price was £2,200, BBC reports.
This piece was presented by Princess Elizabeth to Marion Paulson, the housekeeper of Golirudhaus Palace, as a token of gratitude for buying the newly-weds a ‘wonderful’ dessert set. The woman kept it until her death in the 1980s - and it was only in 2024 that relatives found it in a box under her bed, along with a letter from the Queen. It read: ‘My husband and I are deeply touched that you have given us such a wonderful wedding gift. We are both enchanted by the dessert service; the different flowers and beautiful colours, I know will be a great delight to all who see it.’
The fully packaged cake, in its original condition, is a ‘very rare’ item and was expected to sell for £500, but a Chinese bidder bought it for three times that amount over the phone.
It was the royal couple's luxurious wedding cake. It consisted of four tiers and was soaked in alcohol. To prepare the festive dessert, 2,000 pieces of cake were made, which were then distributed to 146 guests, and the rest to charities, hospitals, schools and other organisations.
As previously reported, the famous ‘Banana with Tape’ will soon be sold at Sotheby's for $1.5 million after its European tour.
