Following Referendum, Moldova to Amend Constitution, Declaring EU Integration as a Strategic Goal
On the eve of 4 November, Moldova made public the decision of the Constitutional Court, which on 31 October approved the results of the referendum on the country's European integration, ZDG writes.
The decision of the Constitutional Court is not subject to appeal. The head of the Constitutional Court, Domnika Manole, said that two judges wrote a dissenting opinion: judges Volodymyr Tsurkan and Serhiy Tsurkan.
This decision was published in the Official Monitor, and now the relevant amendments will be made to the Constitution.
According to the document, the preamble of the Constitution will be amended to include the words about the irreversibility of Moldova's European path, namely: ‘reaffirming the European identity of the people of Moldova and the irreversibility of Moldova's European course, declaring European integration as a strategic goal of Moldova’.
The Constitution will also include a separate article on European integration, and its first paragraph will state that further accession to EU treaties will be approved by an organic law. In Moldova, organic laws are adopted by the parliament by a majority of elected deputies.
As a reminder, a constitutional referendum on European integration was held in Moldova on 20 October alongside the first round of the presidential election. According to the Central Election Commission, the turnout was 50.72%. A total of 1,531,392 voters took part in the vote. Out of a total of 1,488,874 valid votes cast, 749,719 voted in favour of including European integration in the constitution, and 739,155 voted against.
