"Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" On Track to Hit $2 Billion in Global Box Office
The film "Barbie" has already amassed a total of $1.18 billion at the global box office. Surpassing the $1 billion mark became a milestone for Greta Gerwig, marking the first time a film directed solely by a female director has achieved such a sum at the box office. Meanwhile, the film "Oppenheimer" is approaching the $650 million mark. Together, these films are poised to soon cross the $2 billion threshold, as reported by Deadline.
During the past weekend, the Mattel doll-themed movie crossed the $1 billion milestone. Throughout the week, this film earned an additional $45.1 million across 75 international markets. The cumulative international box office earnings reached $657.6 million, with the overall global revenue reaching $1.18 billion.
"Barbie" has also overtaken "The Dark Knight Rises" and all three "Harry Potter" films, securing its place among the top ten highest-grossing films of all time released by Warner Bros. The most lucrative international markets for this romantic comedy were the United Kingdom ($100.1 million), Mexico ($51.8 million), Australia ($47.3 million), Germany ($42.2 million), and Brazil ($42 million).
As for another Warner Bros. production, "Megalodon 2: Chasm", during its second week in theaters, the film collected an additional $43.7 million across 75 markets, bringing the total international earnings to $202.8 million and global earnings to $256.9 million.
"Oppenheimer's" box office earnings dropped by 43% during its fourth weekend, grossing $32 million across 79 markets. Overall, the international revenue for this film about the creator of the atomic bomb stands at $384 million, and the global revenue at $649 million. This Christopher Nolan film has become the highest-grossing of all time for the director across 50 markets, including Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, India, and Poland, and it's also his best-performing "non-superhero film" among his total of 62 works.
In the midst of these achievements, "Mission: Impossible – Redemption Part One" has garnered a total of $522 million. During the past weekend, the film featuring Tom Cruise earned an additional $10.9 million across 67 markets, pushing the cumulative international earnings to $362.9 million.
In its second weekend, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem" collected $10.4 million across 47 markets, elevating the overall global earnings to $94.7 million.
The only significant premiere of this week was the biographical sports drama by Neil Blomkamp, "Gran Turismo", which earned $10 million across 30 international markets and is awaiting its debut on August 25th in the USA. Currently, critics on Rotten Tomatoes rate the film at 60%, while the audience has shown a warmer reception, giving it a rating of 98%.
