Liverpool University to Host “Surprising Ukraine” Event Highlighting Culture and Science
Tomorrow, Liverpool University will host a unique event, “Surprising Ukraine: from culture to science,” dedicated to Ukrainian culture, science, and history.
The Gaze reports this, referring to Eventbrite.
As part of Ukrainisn Weeks in the UK, visitors will be able to discover unexpected cultural connections and scientific achievements of Ukrainians.
The program includes a lecture, “The Beatles and Ukraine” that reveals how Beatlemania penetrated Soviet Ukraine and influenced the formation of future public figures. Guests will also be able to take part in a dynamic three-minute competition of scientific and artistic presentations, where young researchers demonstrate “Surprising Contributions of Ukrainians to the World.”
Of particular interest is the screening of the Ukrainian foreign language film “Science Warriors: Vernadsky Research Base,” which will be part of the event. The documentary tells the story of Ukrainian polar explorers at the Akademik Vernadsky station in Antarctica, who are conducting important scientific research while defending their country on the front lines.
In addition, the exhibition “Hidden Ukrainian Genius” presents the inventions and discoveries of Ukrainian scientists and innovators. The event combines pop culture, scientific, and historical aspects, offering visitors a new and unexpected perspective on Ukraine.
The event is organized by the University of Liverpool and Sumy State University.
Admission is free, and the event will take place on November 11 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in Lecture Hall 1 of the University of Liverpool Learning Center.
The documentary film “Science Warriors” tells the story of Ukrainian polar researchers at the Akademik Wernadsky station in Antarctica, who continue their scientific work despite the war and at the same time participate in the defense of their country on the front lines. Filming took place in Antarctica, on the front lines in Ukraine, and on the research vessel Noosphere.
It shows the contrast between the serene silence of the Antarctic ice fields and the sounds of war on the Ukrainian front. Viewers will see unique footage from the polar station, learn the personal stories of the researchers, and compare their scientific lives with their military experiences. The film highlights the transformation of the heroes — from scientists to soldiers defending the values and independence of Ukraine.
The author of the idea, Ukrainian correspondent Henry Keen, became the first Ukrainian journalist aboard the Noosphere. He traveled from Kyiv to Antarctica to show the stories of researchers, some of whom come to the station straight from the front, work for a year, and then return to fight.
Among the heroes of the film is Artem Ignatenko, a participant in the 26th Antarctic expedition, who voluntarily joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine after Russia's full-scale invasion.
