The renowned series "Bridgerton," set in early 19th century Britain, has not only gained popularity among viewers worldwide but has also positively impacted the economy of the United Kingdom. According to Netflix, it has generated £275 million for the country over the past five years, reports The Business Matters.
The figure of £275 million comes from Netflix's internal calculations. It includes both direct revenues earned by local companies during the production of the series and indirect economic benefits, such as tourism, exhibitions, and other related cultural events.
The company notes that the universe created by producer and writer Shonda Rhimes, which currently includes the first three seasons of "Bridgerton" and the spin-off "Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story," has benefited nearly 5,000 British companies since its launch in December 2020.
"Bridgerton" has also contributed to increased visitor numbers in cities where the series was filmed, including Bath and Bristol, boosting their tourism revenues.
Additionally, the series has led to a 51% increase in the number of children named Daphne, a 27% increase in children named Eloise, and a 26% increase in children named Colin since its premiere.
"The 'Bridgerton' universe holds a special place in culture, resonating with both younger and older audiences, sparking conversations, starting trends, and influencing everything from baby names to weddings. The show has also had a tremendous impact on the UK economy, boosting it by a quarter of a billion pounds over the past five years and supporting thousands of jobs and businesses. It's clear that the arts and cultural business can make a huge economic contribution to local communities. I couldn't be more proud of this," said Shonda Rhimes.
It is worth noting that The Gaze reported the 23rd Transylvanian International Film Festival (TIFF.23) is taking place in Romania, the country’s largest international film festival, expected to attract over 100,000 visitors.
