Cyprus Joins the G7 Declaration on Security Guarantees for Ukraine
Cyprus has become the 30th country to join the G7 declaration on security guarantees for Ukraine. President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced this on his Twitter account.
"Grateful to Cyprus for joining the Vilnius Declaration of the Group of Seven on security guarantees for Ukraine. We will continue to strengthen European security and deepen bilateral cooperation," said the President of Ukraine.
Recognizing that Ukraine cannot become a NATO member during the ongoing war, in March 2023, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his desire to obtain strategic security guarantees for Ukraine.
On July 11-12, a summit of G7 leaders took place in Vilnius. During the summit, the heads of the European Council, the European Commission, and representatives of G7 countries endorsed the initiative of the "Joint Declaration in Support of Ukraine." Each participating country pledged to cooperate with Ukraine by providing specific, long-term commitments and agreements in the field of security.
The document emphasizes that Ukraine's ability to defend itself against aggressors, in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, is the most significant security guarantee for Ukraine. The text also underscores the unity in supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and independence and condemning Russian aggression by all signatory countries.
According to the declaration, Ukraine plans to conduct bilateral negotiations with each country in the field of security. This is aimed at providing the Ukrainian Armed Forces with all the necessary military equipment to resist current and future Russian aggression. This includes the supply of air defense systems, artillery, armored vehicles, combat aviation, as well as cooperation with NATO partners. Additionally, this point includes the development of Ukraine's defense-industrial base, training and education for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and cooperation in intelligence and cyber defense.
Attention is also given to strengthening Ukraine's economy, including reconstruction and recovery efforts to create conditions conducive to Ukraine's economic prosperity, including energy security. Signatory countries commit to providing technical and financial support to meet Ukraine's urgent needs.
Currently, 30 countries, including all G7 members, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and others, have signed the declaration. Albania also passed a corresponding decision before Cyprus.
