Drone Sightings Rise Near Belgian Missile Factory

Belgian defense company Thales Belgium warns of a dangerous increase in drone activity over its factories, as drones are already interfering with the production of 70-mm rockets, most of which are destined for Ukraine.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to Politico.
Thales Belgium warns of an increase in the number of drones over its secret production sites — primarily over the 70-mm missile factory in the Liège region (Évegnée Fort).
“We are seeing more drones than was the case a few months ago,” said Alain Quevrin, country director of the defense company.
He also adds that the company is installing detection systems and has the technical capability to jam or shoot down the devices, but this is not currently permitted by law.
Thales draws attention to the need for clear rules to define where police powers end and the responsibilities of private companies begin, as well as procedures for responding to such observations.
The Gaze reported earlier that against the backdrop of these threats, Thales is seeing incredible demand for its FZ275 missiles. The missiles are used both to destroy large high-altitude drones (guided version) and against swarms of small drones (unguided munitions that scatter fragments). It is noted that most of the current production is directed to Ukraine.
To meet demand and accelerate cooperation, Thales is calling on the EU to set up a body to coordinate cross-border complex projects and arms procurement.
Although the EU does not legally finance arms directly, initiatives such as the SAFE program for joint procurement and exchanges already exist.
In addition, the company highlights the risks of directly shooting down drones. Since debris can cause damage or injury, not only technical means but also a clear legal framework for the use of jammers and weapons against unmanned aerial vehicles are needed.
As The Gaze informed on October 3, the incident involving the appearance of around 15 unknown drones over a Belgian military base has intensified calls for the creation of a joint “drone wall” to protect it.
