EPP Leader Urges EU-Flagged German Troops in Ukraine After Any Peace Deal
The leader of the European Parliament’s largest political bloc, European People’s Party (EPP), Manfred Weber, has called for German soldiers to be deployed to Ukraine under the EU flag if a ceasefire or peace agreement is reached.
The Gaze reports this, referring to Der Spiegel.
Weber said he wants to see European troops “with the EU flag on their uniforms” working alongside Ukrainian forces to help safeguard peace. He warned against relying on Washington alone to deliver stability, saying it would be unrealistic to expect the United States to secure a settlement without substantial European participation.
“When European forces are discussed, Germany cannot remain on the sidelines,” Weber said, pressing Berlin to take a visible role within a broader EU framework.
Weber argued that the continent needs a more assertive security posture as U.S. engagement in Europe becomes less predictable. He urged the EU to develop its own strategic doctrine rather than basing policy on U.S. blueprints. “Europe must write its own security strategy, test its architecture, and act with confidence,” he said.
His comments follow discussions earlier this month among several European leaders about establishing EU-led multinational forces for Ukraine – potentially composed of volunteers from a so-called “coalition of the willing,” with U.S. backing, once hostilities subside.
Berlin has reacted cautiously. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has said any European military role would depend heavily on circumstances, including the behavior of Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin.
As The Gaze previously reported, the United States and European allies are close to finalizing a set of security guarantees for Ukraine as part of ongoing negotiations around a proposed peace framework.
