EU Diplomat: Forcing Ukraine to Cede Land Would Be a Trap

The European Union's chief diplomat, Kaja Kallas, warned against any pressure on Ukraine to cede territory to Russia as part of a future peace agreement.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to the BBC.
In her first British interview after the EU's participation in peace talks on Ukraine, Kaja Kallas warned against ceding territory to Russia. She called it a “trap” that Putin is trying to lure the world into.
Kallas also spoke in detail about reliable and credible security guarantees for Ukraine, acknowledging that at this stage of the negotiations there were not many “concrete steps” to create a deterrent force.
"The strongest security guarantee is a strong Ukraine army," she said, outlining the importance of establishing guarantees that were "not just on paper".
Kaja Kallas added that the member states of the “coalition of the willing” must independently determine what contribution they can make to support Kyiv, and that it is not yet clear in what form these forces will operate.
It is worth recalling that all this is happening against the backdrop of recent international negotiations involving the EU, Ukraine, and the US, as well as after the summit in Alaska. According to Kallas, it was at the meeting in Alaska with the US president that Putin managed to achieve his goals and avoid new sanctions.
The European Union's chief diplomat stressed that Russia is not making any concessions and continues its military actions, and therefore the EU is preparing a new package of sanctions to put pressure on the Kremlin and encourage it to engage in real peace talks.
“Putin is just laughing, not stopping the killing but increasing the killing," Kallas said. "We are forgetting that Russia has not made one single concession."
