EU High Representative: Fall of Assad Regime Shows Weakness of Russia, Iran
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas has reacted to the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, noting that she sees it as a sign of Russia's and Iran's weakness. She wrote about this on the social network X.
Callas called the end of Assad's dictatorship a ‘positive and long-awaited event’.
‘It also shows the weakness of Assad's supporters, Russia and Iran,’ she said.
The EU's priority, Kallas said, is to ensure security in the region, and to this end she will work with all constructive partners, both in Syria and in the region.
‘I am in close contact with ministers from the region. The process of rebuilding Syria will be long and complex, and all parties should be ready to engage constructively,’ the EU foreign policy chief wrote.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis, in turn, said that the events in Syria show that it is possible to defeat Russia in Ukraine. He wrote about this on the social network X.
As The Gaze previously reported, on 8 December in the morning, Syrian rebels announced the liberation of the Syrian capital Damascus and the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime. They declared the end of a ‘dark era and the beginning of a new era for Syria’.
Russia was an ally of the Syrian regime.
