EU Leaders: Georgia’s EU Membership Bid Effectively Halted Due to 'Pro-Russian' Law
On the first day of the EU summit, EU leaders expressed serious concern over recent developments in Georgia, in particular the adoption of the scandalous "pro-Russian" law on transparency of foreign influence.
This is stated in the EU summit outcome.
EU leaders noted that this law is a departure from the steps set out in the Commission's recommendation for candidate status.
"The European Council calls on the Georgian authorities to clarify their intentions by changing their current course of action, which jeopardises Georgia's path to the EU and de facto halts the accession process," the document says.
Looking ahead to Georgia's future path to the EU, the leaders recalled that respect for the EU's fundamental values and principles is essential for any country seeking membership.
The European Union also stressed the need to put an end to acts of intimidation, threats and physical attacks on civil society, political leaders, civil society activists and journalists in Georgia.
The Council of Europe calls on the Georgian authorities to ensure that this autumn's parliamentary elections are free and fair, and encourages partners to provide substantial long-term and short-term election observation.
