EU Starts Negotiations on Visa-Free Regime with Armenia
The European Union has started negotiations on visa liberalisation with Armenia.
This was reported by Radio Liberty.
Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan met with Vice President of the European Commission Margaritis Schinas. The meeting took place in Yerevan.
‘I am glad that there are noticeable changes in our relations. Negotiations on visa liberalisation are starting, and a decision has been made to support the Republic of Armenia with the European Peace Fund, which we appreciate very much,’ Pashinyan said.
The country is also actively discussing the possibility of joining the EU.
Schinas added that the EU is interested in developing relations with Armenia and promoting reforms in the country. The Vice-President of the European Commission also hopes for effective cooperation with the Armenian government on the visa liberalisation dialogue.
The EU and Armenia have had a visa facilitation agreement since 2014, and on 23 July 2024, the European Commission launched a dialogue with Armenia on visa liberalisation.
In April, the European Parliament adopted a resolution proposing to consider granting Armenia candidate status for EU membership. Afterwards, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that the resolution should be discussed in Armenia.
As The Gaze previously reported, the EU Council has provided assistance to the Armenian army for the first time in history. The country was allocated €10 million to support the armed forces.
