European Leaders to Hold Emergency Call with Zelenskyy Over U.S. “Peace Plan”
European leaders are set to hold an urgent phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday to discuss Washington’s latest “peace plan.”
The Gaze reports this, referring to Bloomberg.
According to the outlet, the conversation is scheduled for midday Central European Time (13:00 in Kyiv). German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to join the call.
A German government spokesperson told Bloomberg that Merz had originally planned to visit a school in Berlin on Friday morning but cancelled the appearance to take part in the discussion.
Sources familiar with the matter also said European leaders plan to meet in person on the sidelines of the G20 summit in South Africa on Saturday to coordinate their next steps.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb, widely viewed in Europe as someone whose assessments Donald Trump takes seriously, is expected to join that meeting as well.
European capitals are additionally working to arrange a joint call with U.S. officials to exchange views on Washington’s proposal.
The new U.S. plan has caused significant unease among European governments, who were reportedly excluded from shaping the initial draft.
According to European officials, the proposal resembles a catalogue of demands favorable to Russian President Vladimir Putin rather than a realistic framework for ending the war.
EU representatives have already conveyed to President Donald Trump’s team that any peace initiative stands no chance of success without buy-in from both Kyiv and key European allies.
As The Gaze previously reported, the UK has finalized detailed plans for the potential deployment of British forces to Ukraine, preparing for a possible shift from active conflict to a negotiated settlement.
