Film About War in Ukraine ‘Porcelain War’ Nominated for Oscar
The American Film Academy has announced the nominees for the 97th Academy Awards. Among them is the documentary about the war in Ukraine, 'Porcelain War'. The relevant information is published on the official website of the Academy.
This year's announcement of the nominees was postponed twice due to large-scale forest fires in the United States. The names of the nominees were announced live by actor and comedian Bowen Young and actress and comedian Rachel Sennett.
The documentary The Porcelain War by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev, which was previously shortlisted for the award, has been nominated for Best Documentary.
The film tells the story of three artists from Kharkiv who, despite the danger, stay in the frontline city, where they decorate destroyed buildings with porcelain figurines, filling the city with art. One of the directors, Slava Leontyev, is also one of the film's protagonists. He is now defending Ukraine with arms in his hands.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, where it won the Grand Prix in the documentary competition. In Ukraine, the film was first screened at the Independence American Film Festival in May 2024.
The leaders in terms of the number of nominations this year were The Brutalist with ten nominations, as well as Emilia Perez and Wicked, which received eight nominations each.
Anora, an American romantic drama about a stripper who has an affair with the son of a Russian oligarch, received six nominations. Directed by Sean Baker, the film stars Russian actors Mark Eydelshteyn and Yuri Borisov in the lead male roles. Borisov, who supports the occupation of Ukraine and has appeared in Russian propaganda, was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor.
