Finland Joins NATO’s PURL Initiative to Fund U.S. Weapons Deliveries for Ukraine

Finland has officially joined the PURL initiative, a transatlantic mechanism that enables NATO members and partner countries to finance the purchase of U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine.
The Gaze reports this, referring to a statement made by Finnish Defence Minister Antti Häkkänen.
Häkkänen announced the decision in Brussels before meetings of NATO defence ministers, emphasizing that Finland is ready to make its contribution to the program and will finalize the details in the coming weeks.
“Ukraine’s defence depends heavily on tangible military supplies from the United States,” Häkkänen said. “Washington has made it clear that the financial responsibility for the war being fought in Europe is shifting to Europe itself. Therefore, European countries must now step up and fund these critical U.S. weapons.”
The minister added that Finland “will take its share of responsibility”, urging other European partners to do the same. “Continuing support for Ukraine is vital for Europe, especially for the nations on the front line,” he stressed.
The PURL (Purchase of U.S. Replacement and Lend) initiative allows participating states to fund U.S. arms transfers to Ukraine while replenishing America’s own stockpiles, providing a sustainable long-term model for military assistance.
As The Gaze reported earlier, at least seven NATO member states are expected to announce fresh financial commitments under the PURL initiative to fund the purchase of U.S.-made weapons for Ukraine at today’s meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group.
