First Victim of Massive Floods Confirmed in Czechia, Seven People Missing
The Czech Republic has confirmed the first death as a result of the catastrophic floods that began after extreme rainfall in a number of Eastern and Central European countries.
This was reported by the local Novinky media outlet.
On 16 September, police confirmed that one person drowned in the Krasovka River near the town of Bruntal in the northeast.
‘As for the victims, unfortunately, we have one person who drowned in the Krasovka River,’ said police chief Martin Wondrasek.
Police spokeswoman Sonya Shtetinskaya added that it is very difficult to get to the place of death because of the strong current. Law enforcement officers are working at the scene.
Seven reports of missing persons from different regions have also been registered. Three of them were travelling in a car that ended up in the stream near Lipova Lazne.
Rescuers posted a video of the rescue of three children aged 10-15 in the town of Broumov in the northeast, who were swept away by water and were waiting for help, holding onto tree branches.
On Monday, evacuations were announced for residents of the Přívoz district of Ostrava, and evacuations are also possible in the city of Krnov.
As The Gaze previously reported, deadly floods have swept across Central and Eastern Europe, with thousands of homes flooded, rail services halted, and eight people reported dead.
