G7 Calls on World to Urgently Support Ukraine's Energy Sector
Foreign ministers of the Group of Seven countries have called on the international community to urgently step up support for Ukraine's energy sector ahead of winter.
This is stated in a G7 statement published on the website of the US Department of State.
The statement notes that the countries welcome further commitments to provide funding and in-kind support to meet the most urgent needs of the Ukrainian energy sector.
In particular, this includes the repair of damaged power plants and district heating systems, the deployment of new distributed energy sources, emergency backup power for critical services, and passive protection of energy infrastructure.
‘We call on the international community to urgently step up efforts in this area and provide Ukraine with all the necessary assistance,’ the G7 foreign ministers said in a statement.
The ministerial group also emphasises the important work of international partners, banks and the Energy Community's Ukraine Energy Support Fund in this area.
‘We call on international partners to increase their financial contributions, in particular to the latter fund, to increase Ukraine's resilience next winter,’ they said.
The ministers also pointed out that they are aware of the need for international assistance to protect energy infrastructure from attacks, in particular by strengthening air defence capabilities.
In addition, the Foreign Ministers stressed the importance of implementing reforms in the energy sector in line with the EU accession path and fulfilling commitments under the Energy Community Treaty, including corporate governance standards in line with OECD standards.
‘This is especially important in the run-up to winter, given the scale of repair work and the need for new energy infrastructure,’ they added.
