For the first time in 6 years, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his government delegation have arrived in the Polish capital for intergovernmental consultations. This was announced on the social network X by the head of the Polish government Donald Tusk, who met Scholz with military honours in Warsaw.
"Today, Europe needs strong leadership and a common position on security issues. I welcome the German Chancellor to Warsaw," Tusk wrote under a joint photo with Scholz.
The German Chancellor arrived in Poland with 12 federal and state ministers. According to government sources in Berlin, the German-Polish consultations are expected to give a "powerful impetus" to good neighbourly relations.
It is expected that a joint German-Polish action plan will be agreed upon, which will include several projects. It is also planned that Berlin will present a financial package for Poland, which will include compensation payments to living Polish victims of the occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II, as well as German assistance for the defence of NATO's eastern flank.
In addition, additional funds will be used to build the German-Polish House in Berlin. It will be designed to commemorate the complex German-Polish history and the brutal German occupation during World War II, as well as to create a place of remembrance for Polish war victims.
Politicians from the opposition nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party criticised Prime Minister Donald Tusk for his meeting with Scholz, accusing the Polish leader of representing German interests.
