The German defence company Rheinmetall has received an order from the German government to supply Ukraine with around 100,000 rounds of ammunition for 120mm mortars. The order, worth millions of euros, is part of a recent €400 million military aid package for Ukraine's armed forces.

Delivery is due to start shortly and will continue over the next two years, according to Rheinmetall's website.

The Group's product range includes a full range of 120 mm, 81 mm and 60 mm mortar ammunition. It also includes fire control systems and mortar systems such as the 120 mm Ragnarök and the innovative 60 mm RSG60 mortar system.

Thanks to their extended range, increased accuracy and optimum combat effectiveness, Rheinmetall mortar ammunition can deliver favourable results even in operations in difficult terrain and urban environments.

The latest German government procurement decision underscores Rheinmetall's role as a leading supplier of indirect fire technology.

Rheinmetall is one of the world's largest defence conglomerates, producing weapons for the Bundeswehr and is the main supplier of 120mm tank ammunition to the German armed forces.

Having recently acquired Spanish ammunition manufacturer Expal, Rheinmetall has further strengthened its already extensive experience in infantry fire support.

In October, the German defence conglomerate Rheinmetall and Ukraine's state-owned Ukroboronprom set up a joint venture.

The German company expects to sign contracts to set up two more joint ventures to produce ammunition and air defence systems.

Earlier, Russia threatened that if Rheinmetall built a plant in Ukraine, it would be considered a legitimate military target for the Russian armed forces.

In response, Rheinmetall's CEO stressed that the company would not give up its intention to build a plant in Ukraine. Armin Papperger also intends to protect the plant with Rheinmetall air defence systems.

In his opinion, it is extremely important for Rheinmetall to support its Ukrainian partners in the fight for freedom and democracy.
