IAEA Head Grossi Inspects Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe's Largest, Occupied by Russia
Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhya NPP in Ukraine to assess the nuclear safety situation at Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
He announced this on social media platform X.
"During my 4th visit to ZNPP, I assessed compliance with the 5 IAEA principles for protecting the plant, as well as the state of the existing power supply and cooling systems, the level of personnel qualifications, among other things. These are vital assessments for the safety and security of the facility - there is no room for complacency," he wrote.
As a reminder, on 6 February, Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), arrived in Ukraine and met with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the eve of his visit to ZNPP. The parties discussed current nuclear safety, which is under serious threat due to the occupation of the nuclear facility by Russian troops. Zelenskyy reiterated that the only way to prevent a nuclear disaster at ZNPP is its complete demilitarisation, de-occupation from the Russian military and return under Ukrainian control.
As reported by The Gaze, the day before in Kyiv, Grossi also met with the heads of the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the SNRIU and Energoatom.
Security at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine remains precarious amid worrying recent staff reductions by the Russian occupation authorities, who still hold the facility, which is one of the 10 largest nuclear power plants in the world, said UN Atomic Energy chief Grossi.
