Russia has officially ratified a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement with Iran, formalizing a 20-year bilateral pact that significantly strengthens cooperation across military, security, economic, and geopolitical spheres.

The agreement codifies Iran’s growing support for Russia’s war effort in Ukraine, embedding military-technical cooperation and intelligence sharing into a legal framework. The treaty, signed in January 2025 by Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian, is now in force following ratification by the Russian parliament, The Gaze reports.

The treaty outlines joint military exercises, intelligence sharing, and defense cooperation, including maritime security and cyber defense. Russia and Iran pledge to resist foreign influence online and tighten domestic internet controls. They will also coordinate on counterterrorism, law enforcement, and within INTERPOL.

Diplomatically, both nations commit to aligning positions in global bodies like the UN and collaborating on arms control. Economically, the pact aims to bypass Western sanctions through national currency trade and independent payment systems, while boosting energy ties, infrastructure projects, and joint investment—especially in oil, gas, and nuclear energy.

The treaty will remain in force for 20 years, with automatic 5-year extensions, unless either party objects. It also includes legal mechanisms for dispute resolution, amendments, and sector-specific agreements to be signed in the future.

The move comes amid growing military cooperation between the two sanctioned states. Analysts say the agreement bolsters Russia’s war footing and reinforces Tehran’s role as a key ally in Moscow’s confrontation with the West.

Iran is actively cooperating with Russia in the military sphere. In particular, it has recently become known that Russia may have received about 200 Iranian short-range ballistic missiles. Additionally, over 8,000 Iran-made drones have been launched by Russia since the start of the full-scale invasion.
