Moldova to Receive €9 Million from EU to Strengthen Air Defence
The European Union Council has decided to allocate an additional nine million euros from the European Peace Facility to support the Armed Forces of Moldova. These funds will be used to strengthen Moldova's air defence system, as reported on the EU Council’s website.
With this decision, the EU Council continues its support for the Moldovan Armed Forces. Previously, the EU Council allocated 41 million euros for the modernization of the Moldovan army’s defence capabilities in the areas of mobility, air surveillance, electronic warfare, and logistics.
"The EU is committed to providing all necessary support to Moldova in addressing the challenges posed by Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine, as well as to strengthening the country's resilience, security, and stability in the face of Russia's destabilising actions," the statement reads.
According to European officials, this new aid will help Moldova align with European standards and enhance its participation in EU military missions and operations.
It should be noted that the total support for Moldova under the European Peace Facility now amounts to 137 million euros.
The Gaze previously reported that Moldova became the first country in history to sign a security agreement with the EU. This agreement will enhance cooperation between Moldova and the EU in defence, cybersecurity, and countering foreign interference to an "unprecedented level."
Additionally, Moldova will increase intelligence sharing with the EU, conduct joint military exercises, and be included in the bloc's joint arms procurement - measures that will form the most profound formal step linking its national defence with Western partners.
