New Zealand Extends Military Support for Ukraine Through 2026

New Zealand has announced an extension of its military assistance to Ukraine, reaffirming its commitment to supporting the country’s self-defense efforts amid ongoing Russian aggression.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to Beehive, the official website of the New Zealand Government.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon confirmed this decision, stating that up to 100 New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel will continue training Ukrainian soldiers in the United Kingdom and across Europe until December 2026.
“New Zealand is unwavering in its support for Ukraine against Russia’s illegal and unprovoked invasion,” said Luxon. “Our ongoing deployment provides essential training, intelligence, liaison, and logistical support to bolster Ukraine’s resilience.”
Under the renewed 2025/2026 mandate, NZDF troops will deliver specialized training in areas such as combat casualty care, maritime explosive ordnance disposal, and combat engineering. These activities are designed to align with the evolving needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and their allies.
Defence Minister Judith Collins highlighted the impact of this mission, noting that over 53,000 Ukrainian troops have already been trained through the allied effort. “Our personnel are making a real difference, and I’m proud of New Zealand’s valued contribution to Ukraine’s defense,” she said.
Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters added that New Zealand supports efforts to reach a just and lasting peace and is closely monitoring ceasefire negotiations while actively engaging in UK-led discussions on future peace support measures.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, New Zealand’s total support for Ukraine has reached $152 million USD. This includes $102.3 million in military aid, $31.9 million in humanitarian assistance, and $5.2 million directed toward international legal processes and human rights initiatives.
In 2024 alone, the government provided NZ$41.9 million through two aid packages, emphasizing a sustained and strategic approach to Ukraine’s defense and recovery.
As The Gaze reported earlier, in March, New Zealand participated in the coalition's of the willing meeting held in London.
