Poland plans to transfer the rest of its MiG-29 aircraft, which are being decommissioned, to Ukraine in exchange for technology related to the production of UAVs and missiles.
This was announced by the Polish General Staff on social media, according to Ukrinform.
“We would like to inform you that negotiations with Ukraine on the transfer of MiG-29 aircraft are ongoing. The transfer of the aircraft is related to the fact that they have reached the end of their service life and there are no prospects for their further modernization in the Polish Armed Forces,” the General Staff of the Polish Army said.
At the same time, they noted that a final decision on this matter “has not yet been made.”
As noted by the Polish side, the transfer of aircraft will be part of the Alliance's policy of supporting Ukraine and ensuring the security of NATO's eastern flank. It is emphasized that the tasks of the decommissioned MiG-29 aircraft will be performed by F-16 and FA-50 aircraft.
“At the same time, in connection with the transfer of aircraft, negotiations are ongoing with Ukraine on providing Poland with certain drone and missile technologies. The goal is not only to compensate Poland for the loss of equipment, but also, above all, to acquire and jointly develop new defense and industrial competencies,” the Polish General Staff emphasized.
Earlier, Polish expert and former Minister of National Defense Janusz Onyszkiewicz told Ukrinform that Poland may transfer the remaining MiG-29 fighters in service with the Polish Army by the end of this year.
