Polish President and NATO Secretary General Discuss Possible Transfer of Polish MiG-29 Fighters to Ukraine
At a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Polish President Andrzej Duda discussed the conditions for the transfer of a squadron of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, Polsat News reports.
‘We discussed the issue of our MiG-29s, which we have in service, some of which were transferred to Ukraine some time ago... We have one squadron of MiGs left, and there are questions about the decision regarding them. We are using these aircraft at the moment - these are MiG-29s that operate within the framework of our missions. If we transfer them to Ukraine, there is one fundamental condition - our skies must be protected,’ the President of Poland said.
He added that the aircraft are currently used by the Polish army to ensure airspace security.
As a reminder, the American missile defence base Aegis Ashore was officially opened in Poland in the village of Redzikowo (Pomeranian Voivodeship).
‘This American base will be built on our land, in Poland, in the centre of Poland, and from this moment on, when this base is here, the whole world will clearly see that this is no longer a Russian sphere of influence. ’, said President Duda.
According to him, the opening of the base in Redzikowo is ‘a kind of symbol’ of Polish-American relations.
The Redzikow base is part of the US missile defence system. It is designed to protect Europe from short-range (1000-3000 km) and medium-range (3000-5500 km) missiles.
Among other things, it is equipped with the Aegis Ashore system, the land-based equivalent of a ship-based missile defence system.
The launchers in Redzikovo contain state-of-the-art SM-3 Block 2A interceptors, which, due to their design, can fly very fast and far.
