Resignation of the Polish Government: Sejm Votes No-Confidence in Morawiecki
Today, the Polish Sejm made the decision to express a vote of no-confidence in the government of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. In favour of confidence in the Morawiecki government, 190 deputies voted, while 266 voted against. No one abstained. Consequently, Morawiecki's mission ended in failure, and now, according to the law, the Sejm will choose a candidate for the position of prime minister. The information is reported by PAP.
"In connection with the Sejm not expressing confidence in the Council of Ministers according to Article 154(2) of the Constitution, and Mr. Mateusz Morawiecki's mission ending in failure, the initiative to appoint the Prime Minister will now be transferred, according to Article 154(3) of the Constitution, to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland. The Sejm of the Republic of Poland will now proceed to the election of the Prime Minister. I call for a meeting of the Senate Convention in my office immediately after I declare a break," said Sejm Speaker Szymon Holownia.
The candidate from the Civic Coalition, Poland 2050, and the New Left is Donald Tusk.
"Poles have decided that this should be a Sejm of dialogue and cooperation, not a Sejm divided by groups of mutual hatred," said the outgoing Prime Minister.
On the day of the vote of confidence in the government of Mateusz Morawiecki, the Sejm received nine government projects. Among them are amendments to the Law on Higher Education and additions to the Civil Code regarding franchising.
It is worth recalling that at the end of November, President Andrzej Duda swore in the new government of Mateusz Morawiecki, formed after parliamentary elections, as the first constitutional step.
Today, Prime Minister Morawiecki presented a report to the Sejm, requesting a vote of confidence in the government. After the vote of confidence in the government of Mateusz Morawiecki, a one-hour break was announced, during which the submission of candidates for the second constitutional stage of the prime minister's election took place. The candidate for prime minister can be nominated by a group of no fewer than 46 members of parliament.
According to the schedule on the Sejm website, deputies will proceed to the election of the prime minister in the second constitutional stage. Then there will be debates and voting on the election of the new prime minister.
The candidate from KO, PSL, Poland 2050, and the left is the head of PO, Donald Tusk. On November 10, the leaders of these parties signed a coalition agreement. In total, these parties have 248 deputies.
On Tuesday, December 12, at 9:00, the new prime minister will present the program of activities and the composition of the government, as well as a proposal to elect the Council of Ministers. According to the schedule, the vote will take place at 15:00.
The Sejm elects the Prime Minister and his proposed members of the Council of Ministers by an absolute majority of votes in the presence of no fewer than half of the legally determined number of deputies.
