Romania Summoned the Head of the Russian Embassy's Affairs Over the Crash of Russian 'Shahed' Drones
Romania has summoned the head of the Russian diplomatic mission in Bucharest and expressed its protest over Russian combat drones that crashed on Romanian territory.
This was reported by Digi24, citing a statement by the country's Foreign Ministry.
"State Secretary for Strategic Affairs Julian Fota expressed the Romanian side's protest over the violation of Romanian airspace after the discovery of drone fragments near the border with Ukraine, similar to those used by Russian forces for aggression against Ukraine. At the same time, the Romanian official condemned the systematic, unjustified, and barbaric attacks by Russian forces against the Ukrainian population and civilian infrastructure, including near the Romanian border along the Danube, posing a threat to Romanian citizens",- the statement said.
Furthermore, Fota has already conveyed his country's demand to the Russian side to cease attacks on Ukrainian civilians and critical infrastructure, including those posing an immediate threat to residents of Romania living near the Ukrainian border.
It is worth noting that on the night of September 4th, the Russian Federation carried out another terrorist attack on the port infrastructure of Odesa, launching 32 combat drones of the 'Shahed' type into Ukrainian territory.
Later, it became known that during this attack, several 'Shahed' drones ended up on the territory of neighboring Romania, where they subsequently exploded.
Initially, the Romanian side dismissed any reports of Russian drones falling on its territory. However, this information was later confirmed by Romania's Minister of Defense, Angel Tilvar.
In turn, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis called for an immediate "professional investigation" into the discovery of Russian UAV fragments on the country's territory.
"If it is confirmed that these elements originate from a Russian unmanned aerial vehicle, such a situation will be absolutely unacceptable and a serious violation of Romania's sovereignty and territorial integrity as a NATO ally",- Iohannis stated.
Later this Saturday, it was announced that Romanian military personnel found fragments of another Russian drone in the area of the village of Plauru, Tulcea County.
Following this, the Romanian President declared that the discovery of new drone fragments on Romanian territory is an unacceptable violation of the country's airspace sovereignty.
In his statement, Iohannis also noted that he informed NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg about the drone fragments – the second to fall on Romanian territory within a week – and that Stoltenberg confirmed NATO's full solidarity with Romania.
