Russian Strike on Kyiv Kills Eight, Dozens Injured – Zelenskyy

A Russian missile and drone barrage struck Kyiv overnight, killing at least eight people, including a child, and injuring more than 40.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the casualties in a social media post, describing the attack as another “massive strike” against residential areas.
Explosions and falling drone debris caused widespread damage across multiple districts, sparking fires in residential buildings, offices, a kindergarten, and vehicles.
Emergency crews were working through the rubble of a destroyed apartment building, where more people may still be trapped.
Separately, Russian forces struck an Intercity+ high-speed train depot, severely damaging one train. Ukrzaliznytsia (Ukrainian Railways) said staff had taken shelter in time and no casualties were reported.
The president said the assault demonstrated Moscow’s rejection of diplomacy. “Russia chooses ballistics over the negotiating table. It chooses to keep killing rather than end the war. And it still does not fear consequences, taking advantage of the world’s silence and those who seek excuses for Putin,” he said.
As Zelenskyy noted, “we expect a reaction from China to what is happening. China has repeatedly called for non-expansion of the war and for a ceasefire. This is absent because of Russia.
We expect a reaction from Hungary. The death of children should definitely cause stronger emotions than anything else. We expect a reaction from everyone in the world who called for peace, but now more often remains silent than takes principled positions.”
He also renewed his call for tougher sanctions. “Deadlines have been missed, diplomatic opportunities destroyed. Russia must be held accountable for every strike, for every day of this war,” he said.
A massive Russian strike on Kyiv overnight Thursday, August 28, left at least eight people dead and 45 injured, according to the Kyiv City Military Administration. In a statement on Telegram, officials said the number of wounded had risen to 45 as of 8:30 a.m. local time.
