Starmer Stands with Ukraine, Urges U.S. to Embrace Kyiv’s 5-Point Peace Plan

UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has firmly opposed any international effort to recognize Crimea as part of Russia, directly challenging peace terms reportedly supported by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Gaze reports on this with reference to The Telegraph.
Starmer emphasized that only Ukraine should determine the outcome of any peace settlement, underscoring his administration’s commitment to Ukrainian sovereignty and international law.
“We must not forget – Ukraine is the victim of aggression. Any peace must be on Ukraine’s terms,” Starmer stated. He reiterated that the UK stands fully behind President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government's position, affirming that Moscow must agree to an unconditional ceasefire.
Tensions have emerged over conflicting proposals for ending the war. Trump's seven-point plan, which allegedly includes formal recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, has drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv and allies in Europe. Starmer, while careful not to directly condemn the former U.S. leader, made it clear that such concessions are not acceptable without Ukraine’s full agreement.
Ukraine has reportedly submitted its own five-point peace framework to the U.S., which emphasizes the following:
1. No recognition of Russia’s annexation of Crimea in line with international law.
2. Binding security guarantees as a prerequisite for any territorial compromises, even temporary ones.
3. Reasserting Ukraine’s central role in the negotiation process.
4. Warning for the US and NATO: if Russia retains control over Crimea, it may attack not only Ukraine, but Turkey, Romania and Bulgaria are also at risk.
5. Ukraine does not agree to limit the number of its troops and defense industry.
Despite his resistance to some of Trump’s proposals, Starmer rejected suggestions that the UK should pivot toward a Europe-only security strategy, reaffirming the importance of NATO and transatlantic unity.
The proposed “coalition of the willing” has reportedly shifted focus from deploying Western combat troops to Ukraine, opting instead to send military trainers to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities while reducing risks of direct NATO-Russia confrontation.
As diplomatic efforts intensify, the UK maintains that a durable and just peace must be rooted in Ukraine’s sovereignty, adherence to international law, and a unified European and transatlantic security framework. British officials stress that Ukraine's five-point peace plan should form the cornerstone of any future agreement.
As The Gaze reported earlier, a U.S. proposal to recognize Russia’s annexation of Crimea has been met with strong opposition from global leaders.
