Support for Peace Summit, Security, and Other "Fundamental Issues": Ukraine and Hungary Prepare Bilateral Treaty
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in Kyiv on the second day after the start of Hungary's EU presidency to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"This is a clear indication of our common European priorities. It is important to return a just peace to Ukraine and the whole of Europe, to resolve the existing difficulties and to provide new foundations for strengthening Europe, for economic and social growth," the President of Ukraine said.
Viktor Orban said the purpose of his visit was to resolve issues of bilateral relations. He stressed Hungary's desire to establish them and sign a bilateral agreement in the future.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked Hungary for supporting Ukrainians and providing humanitarian aid to our country. He also noted the country's participation in the first Peace Summit and support for the final communiqué.
"We discussed in detail how Hungary can further demonstrate its leadership in the preparation of the second Peace Summit. We see an opportunity to organise the second Peace Summit this year, we would like to do so very much, and we can do all the preparatory work for this in the coming months," he said.
During the meeting, the parties also discussed cooperation at the EU level and expectations from the Hungarian presidency.
Special attention was paid to the most fundamental topics of neighbourly relations: trade, cross-border cooperation, infrastructure and energy issues. In particular, they agreed to open the first Ukrainian school in Hungary.
"The Hungarian state will finance this school. As many Ukrainian schools as needed will be opened. It is important for us that Ukrainians feel at home in Hungary," Viktor Orban said.
He also expressed hope that the issues of the Hungarian national minority would be resolved and noted all the initiatives of the President of Ukraine to achieve peace. The Prime Minister thanked Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his outspoken position and assured of Hungary's support.
"I wish all the best to Ukraine, and during Hungary's presidency, we will help you in every way we can," Orban said.
