A bipartisan bill would allow the US president to impose secondary sanctions and tariffs on countries that finance Putin's military machine.A bipartisan bill on sanctions against Russia is currently being pushed through the US Congress.
It will give the US president even more tools to stop the war in Ukraine, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said on social media.
The legislation allows the US president to impose secondary sanctions and tariffs — at his discretion — on countries that continue to buy cheap Russian oil and gas, thereby supporting Putin's military machine. This law is designed to give President Trump more flexibility and authority to force Putin to the negotiating table by putting pressure on both Putin himself and the countries that support him, such as Iran. I am grateful for the strong bipartisan support for this bill in both the House of Representatives and the Senate," Graham wrote.
The senator emphasised that the recently imposed sanctions against Russia's two largest oil companies are already having a significant impact. The law on sanctions against Russia is designed to continue this momentum in order to ‘end this war honourably, fairly and once and for all.’
According to forecasts, US sanctions could significantly impact the Russian military economy, primarily the energy sector, which accounts for about a quarter of the country's state budget. At the same time, the effectiveness of these restrictions depends on how decisively and consistently Washington implements them.
