Ukraine and Germany have inked a bilateral agreement on security cooperation, following the G7 declaration on security assurances for Ukraine. This took place during President Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to Berlin, as announced by him on his Facebook page.
"Today, Olaf Scholz and I signed the Agreement on Cooperation in Security and Long-Term Support between Ukraine and Germany. It's an unprecedented document that secures German support for Ukraine at over 7 billion euros for this year. This includes weaponry with concrete contracts already in place. The agreement solidifies Germany's stance on sanctions against the aggressor, tribunal, and frozen assets. I thank Germany and the entire German people for solidarity with our state and people, for all the support and assistance," said the Ukrainian president in a statement.
Details of the agreement are available on the website of the Office of the President of Ukraine. The document notably addresses security cooperation, which will last for the entire duration of the agreement - 10 years.
"Germany intends to provide unwavering support to Ukraine as much as needed to help Ukraine defend itself, restore territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, and ensure its free and democratic future," the agreement states.
Germany pledges to continue supporting Ukraine on its path of reforms, while Ukraine commits to ongoing reforms, with special attention to areas outlined for EU accession as per the recommendations of the European Commission dated November 8, 2023.
In the event of a potential future Russian aggression against Ukraine, consultations within 24 hours are stipulated in the agreement to determine further steps. Germany, in this regard, reaffirms its readiness to provide rapid and consistent support to Ukraine in the security sphere, including supplying modern military equipment and offering economic assistance. Additionally, Germany will seek EU support for imposing economic and other sanctions against Russia and will consult with Ukraine regarding its self-defence needs, guaranteed by Article 51 of the UN Charter.
It's worth noting that a similar agreement is also planned with France, where Volodymyr Zelensky will head after meetings in Germany.
