Ukraine Proposes Global Platform to Modernize Humanitarian Law

Ukraine is initiating the creation of an international platform to update and strengthen humanitarian law in order to effectively respond to contemporary challenges and introduce preventive sanctions for violations.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to Ukrinform.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, announced Ukraine's desire to begin creating a platform for the development of international humanitarian law at the opening of the conference “International Humanitarian Law in the Context of Contemporary Challenges.”
The Minister stressed that the international community must strictly adhere to the norms of international humanitarian law, and violations of these norms should automatically result in sanctions and preventive measures.
“Violations of the law must be punished. That is why today we are initiating the creation of a platform for the progressive development of international humanitarian law," Sybiha said.
He added that this platform should bring together states, international organizations, experts, and civil society. It is expected to have tasks such as identifying gaps in existing international humanitarian law, developing new provisions on unregulated issues, and promoting the implementation of amendments to it.
The Head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized Ukraine`s readiness to become a coordinator for the renewal of international humanitarian law so that it can anticipate conflicts and prevent new wars: "Ukraine is ready to serve as a platform and coordinator... International humanitarian law is a guarantee of preserving humanity in the world.”
"The Geneva Conventions were one war too late. It is within our power to ensure that international humanitarian law prevents the next war, in particular by filling the existing gaps. This is our moral right and our moral duty," Sybiha added.
