Ukrainian Film ‘U Are the Universe’ Wins 3 Awards at Science Fiction Film Festival in Italy
The Ukrainian science fiction tragicomedy ‘U Are the Universe’, directed by Pavlo Ostrikov, won three awards at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival in the Italian city of Trieste. This was reported by the Ukrainian State Film Agency on Facebook.
‘The fantastic film directed by Pavlo Ostrikov won three awards at the festival in Trieste, which took place from 29 October to 3 November: Asteroide award; Audience award (The Begin Hotels); INAF event horizon award,’ the statement said.
As noted, the latter award, established in 2023 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the first International Science Fiction Film Festival in Trieste, is awarded by a jury consisting of astrophysicists, journalists and film critics.
The film U Are the Universe tells the story of an astronaut, Andriy, who is left alone in space after a spacecraft accident. His only connection with the Earth is Olya, a flight control centre operator. Their emotional connection changes the lives of both characters.
The Ukrainian State Film Agency reports that the film will be presented at eight more international film festivals in November.
The film was created with the support of the Ukrainian State Film Agency in co-production between Ukraine and Belgium.
For reference: The Trieste Science+Fiction Festival is the largest Italian science fiction film festival, bringing together science fiction, horror and fantasy genres from around the world. Founded in 2000, it continues the tradition of fantastic screenings in Trieste since 1963.
The world premiere of U Are the Universe took place at the Toronto International Film Festival as part of the Discovery programme.
As The Gaze previously reported, on 28 September, the film U Are the Universe directed by Pavlo Ostrikov won several awards at the European Fantastic Film Festival in Strasbourg.
