Ukrainian High Jumpers Sensationally Claim Silver and Bronze at European Championships
The continental athletics championships continue in Rome, Italy. The fifth day of Euro 2024 turned out to be incredibly emotional, as Ukrainian high jumpers took a double podium.
Vlad Lavsky, an absolute debutant at major international forums among adults, won a silver medal. In his first elite final, he cleared 2.29m.
The bronze medallist was Oleg Doroshchuk, who finished the competition with a height of 2.26m in a tense struggle.
Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi won the gold medal at his home stadium in Rome.
In general, only the Italians had a greater representation in the men's high jump final. Three athletes, led by the charismatic Gianmarco Tamberi, defended the hosts' honour.
Even the President of Italy came to watch.
Oleg Doroshchuk and Vladislav Lavsky jumped 2.17 on their first attempt. But the next bar, 2.22, made them nervous - both jumped it only on the third attempt.
However, they made up for it on the next mark - 2.26, and both Oleg and Vlad were the only athletes to jump it on the first attempt, so they became intermediate leaders.
After this height, there were only five participants left in the sector - the Italian Tamberi, the Belgian Thomas Carmoy and the Czech Jan Stafela.
Then the bar was raised to 2.29.
The only one who took it on the first attempt was Vladislav Lavsky, for whom this figure is equal to the personal best Vlad recently set at the Ukrainian Championships in Lutsk.
Tamberi took 2.29 on his third attempt. Oleh Doroshchuk failed to achieve this mark, as did Stafely and Karma.
