Ukrainian Pilots Complete Basic Training in the UK and Learn to Operate F-16 Fighters in Denmark
The first cohort of Ukrainian pilots, having completed basic training with the Royal Air Force in the United Kingdom, is now undergoing instruction in operating F-16 fighters in Denmark. Comprising six experienced Ukrainian fighter pilots, the group underwent specialized English language training for aviation to enhance their ability to participate in coalition training and support.
An additional ten Ukrainian pilot trainees participated in language preparation and remain in the United Kingdom to continue practical basic flight training. They will also acquire essential skills such as aviation medicine and centrifuge training.
"The United Kingdom played a crucial role in bolstering Ukraine's air defence after Putin initiated his full-scale invasion, providing hundreds of missiles, ammunition, radars, and defence systems. With the support of the UK and our allies, the Ukrainian Armed Forces can now intercept and destroy the majority of incoming munitions, safeguarding their civilian population and vital infrastructure," stated UK Defence Minister Grant Shapps.
The program is designed to equip trainee pilots with the skills necessary for the next phase of fighter training in partner countries and align future Ukrainian pilots with NATO's standard approach to aviation. Pilots undergoing basic flight training engage in practical sessions on Grob Tutor aircraft with experienced RAF instructors, covering general control procedures, instrument flying, medium and low-level navigation, as well as formation flying.
In addition to pilot training, dozens of Ukrainian aviation technicians are also undergoing English language training tailored to engineering practices.
"Ukraine highly values the pilot training provided by the United Kingdom and other partners to help us prepare for the operation of F-16s in Ukraine. This is a rapid and effective program to arm Ukrainian pilots with the necessary skills for the war against Russia," noted Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov.
In August, the RAF initiated flight and English language training as part of the UK's contribution to the international Air Force Capability Coalition for Ukraine, involving collaborative efforts of allies and partners to enhance Ukraine's military air capabilities.
