US President Trump Promises Tariff Increases on the European Union and 10% Penalty Tariffs on China
US President Donald Trump has promised to hit the European Union with additional tariffs.
He told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, Reuters reports.
Donald Trump made his latest tariff threats public the day after taking office, without immediately imposing duties as he had promised during his election campaign.
The US president said that the EU and other countries also have an alarming trade surplus with the United States.
‘The European Union is treating us very, very badly. That's why they're going to have tariffs. This is the only way... to get justice,’ he said.
The day before, on Tuesday, 21 January, US President Donald Trump reiterated his call for the European Union to buy more US oil and gas if it wants to avoid tariffs.
Trump also said that he plans to impose an additional 10 per cent duty on all Chinese imports from 1 February to force Beijing to step up its efforts to combat the smuggling of the synthetic drug fentanyl from China to the US.
The US president also threatened to impose 25 per cent duties on Mexico and Canada.
