Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is actively seeking a bilateral meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump on the sidelines of the upcoming G7 summit in Canada, his top aide confirmed on Friday.

The Gaze reports on this with reference to Politico.

Speaking on national television, Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak revealed that a recent high-level Ukrainian visit to Washington was strategically aimed at laying the groundwork for the potential encounter.

The G7 summit will take place June 15-17 in Kananaskis, Alberta.

“Our visit was an essential step in preparing for what we hope will be a meeting between President Zelenskyy and President Trump during the G7,” Yermak stated. “We see this as a critical opportunity for dialogue.”

While in Washington, the Ukrainian delegation held discussions with senior U.S. lawmakers and officials about expanding military assistance to Kyiv as it continues to defend against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Yermak stressed Ukraine’s willingness to co-finance certain defense procurements, including advanced missile defense systems, under the existing economic cooperation agreement with the United States.

“There is mutual understanding that support must continue,” Yermak said. “We are not just asking, we’re also prepared to purchase necessary systems to protect our people.”

The visit also coincided with growing momentum in the U.S. Senate for new sanctions against Russia and its energy partners.

Ukrainian officials met with Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, who are leading a bipartisan initiative to impose sweeping tariffs on nations that continue to buy Russian oil and gas.

“We hope this sanctions package will pass, but even starting the legislative process sends a powerful signal,” Yermak noted. “It’s about cutting off the financial lifeline fueling Russia’s war machine.”
