Zelenskyy to Attend G7 Summit in Canada, Hopes to Meet President Trump on Sidelines

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on Thursday that he will attend the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Canada next week and expressed hope of meeting U.S. President Donald Trump during the event, The Gaze reports, citing Reuters.
Speaking at a joint press conference with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, Zelenskyy outlined his agenda for the summit, including discussions on continued support for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and securing future financing for reconstruction efforts.
“Anyway, the final decision is in the White House, it depends on the President of the United States of America,” Zelenskyy said regarding the possibility of tough U.S. sanctions on Russia.
“I hope that we will have a conversation (with Trump) at the G7 summit and I hope that if no decisions are made before then, I will be able to have at least an understanding of how close we are to that decision,” he added.
President Trump said last week that he had not yet made a decision on whether to proceed with the sanctions being considered by the U.S. Senate.
Zelenskyy also acknowledged the challenges Ukraine would face if U.S. weapons deliveries were halted, saying Kyiv would struggle to replace American military aid.
At the same briefing, he emphasized Ukraine’s intent to deepen cooperation with Germany on joint weapons production: “We need financing… Germany is one of those countries where they understand it and they know the rules and they always do what they say.”
Defense Minister Pistorius stated that Germany’s military assistance to Ukraine has reached €7 billion ($8.12 billion) in 2025, with an additional €1.9 billion pending approval by the Bundestag.
As The Gaze previously reported, Boris Pistorius, the German Minister of Defense, arrived in Kyiv on Thursday, June 12, to engage in critical discussions with Ukrainian officials on enhancing military assistance to Ukraine underscoring Germany’s unwavering support for Ukraine as it continues to confront Russia’s aggression.
