The United States of America has certain obligations to Europe with regard to security on the continent. For this reason, European leaders will insist on Washington's participation in ending Russia's war against Ukraine. At the same time, Europe is likely to solve its defence and security issues on its own. This opinion was expressed by Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine.

The Gaze reports on this with reference to a broadcast on the FREEdom TV channel.

According to Podolyak, Europe and the United States are allies, and the United States has certain obligations to Europe.

‘Europe, for example, now sees this war not as a war on the territory of the former Soviet Union, but as a threat to European security. The United States made certain commitments to ensure security in Europe, at least up to a certain point. I understand that things may be changing now. Again, Europe will probably be ready to solve its security and defence problems more independently. But, nevertheless, as long as the format and formula that was in place after the Second World War, that the United States bears a certain burden of responsibility for the security of Europe, is in place, of course, it will insist on the need to continue certain efforts of the United States to resolve the war in Europe, I emphasise, in Europe, not in Ukraine, but in Europe,’ Podoliak said.

He is confident that a country as powerful and strong as the United States is unlikely to withdraw from the negotiation process.

‘Of course, they are using rhetoric to force Russia first of all, because Ukraine supports the concept of exit from the war proposed by the United States, a ceasefire at the first stage, a transition to the negotiation process, to settle further, to reach the end of the war through the settlement of certain diplomatic policies. But Russia is demonstrating a categorical refusal to do all this,’ said the advisor to the Presidential Administration.

Podoliak explained why the US cannot leave the issue of Russia's war against Ukraine aside.

‘This is a war of decisive importance, which means that it affects global trade, global economic interactions, the value of national currencies, and above all the value of the reserve currency called the dollar. It affects the political status of certain states, it affects the formation of new alliances,’ he said.

The adviser believes that it would be very beneficial for Russia if such a major player as the United States withdrew from the negotiation process, because then Russia could consistently address the challenges of global influence.

‘I don't see any scenario where the United States would stand aside, isolate itself, that is, pursue a total isolationist policy, like North America, Latin America, we are focused here, there are new trade organisations that we have started to form, there are tasks of global confrontation with China. It will look very strange that the United States has refused to confront a much less resourceful country, a less decisive country, but wants to confront China, which is in a strategic partnership with Russia,’ Podolyak said.

As The Gaze reported earlier, on Friday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that President Donald Trump may drop efforts to broker a Russia-Ukraine peace deal within days if there are no signs of progress.
