"Barbie" Surpasses $1 Billion in Global Box Office
The film "Barbie," directed by Greta Gerwig, has broken box office records, reaching over $1 billion worldwide in just 17 days of release. This marks a historic achievement for Gerwig as she becomes the first female director whose solo work has garnered such a high amount, as reported by Variety.
According to the publication, the comedy "Barbie" crossed the $1 billion mark in global box office, with $459 million collected in North America and an additional $572 million in other regions worldwide. These impressive figures have cemented Gerwig's position as a trailblazer in the film industry, underscoring the importance of female representation in the directorial field.
Previously, three other films co-directed by women reached the billion-dollar milestone: "Frozen" ($1.3 billion) and its sequel "Frozen 2" ($1.45 billion), co-directed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck, as well as "Captain Marvel" ($1.1 billion), directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck.
It is noteworthy that "Barbie" achieved this historic billion-dollar mark within just 17 days after its premiere, making it the fastest achievement in Warner Bros. film history. The previous record was held by "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," which took 19 days to reach the milestone.
"Barbie" managed to maintain its leading position despite the debut of "Meg 2: Trench" - a film starring Jason Statham that grossed $30 million domestically and $112 million internationally, totaling $142 million worldwide. Meanwhile, "Oppenheimer" dropped to third place in North America with $28.7 million in its third weekend, while its international box office reached $228.5 million, bringing the global total to $552.9 million.
The film "Barbie" was released on July 21 and immediately exceeded all expectations, earning $155 million in box office revenue during its opening weekend, setting a record for 2023. It also became the most successful debut for a film directed by a woman.
Following the release of "Barbie," the world has been swept by a true Barbie-mania.
