Bayer Leverkusen Clinches First-Ever German Football Championship
For the first time in its history, Bayer 04 Leverkusen has won the German football championship. In the final matchday of the Bundesliga, Leverkusen triumphed over Augsburg with a score of 2-1, officially securing their new title as champions of German football. Beyond this historic achievement, the "pharmacists" set another unprecedented record in German football: Xabi Alonso's team became the first in Bundesliga history to complete an entire season unbeaten. Bayer won 28 matches and drew six, amassing a total of 90 points, according to ZDF.
Bayer's coach, Xabi Alonso, emphasized the importance of this match due to their historic unbeaten run.
"This was our first final of the season," he said after the match against Augsburg.
Leverkusen's fans celebrated almost the entire match, only pausing their loud chants once. When the match timer hit 19:04 minutes, they held a minute of silence in memory of all Bayer fans who did not live to see this historic championship.
Notably, this season Bayer has the chance to achieve a treble—winning the national league, their country's cup, and a European cup. Bayer is well-positioned, with the German Cup final against lower-league Kaiserslautern and the Europa League final against Italy's Atalanta. The "pharmacists" are favoured to win both matches.
The dominant force in German football, Bayern Munich, lost to Hoffenheim in the final round, dropping to second place behind the sensational Stuttgart. Alongside these teams, RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund will represent Germany in the Champions League next season.
Additionally, The Gaze recently reported another unique achievement by the Leverkusen club. By drawing 2-2 with AS Roma on May 9th in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League semi-final, the team set a record of 49 consecutive official matches unbeaten across all competitions.
It’s worth noting that the previous record for an unbeaten streak in football lasted 59 years. It was held by Portugal's Benfica, who went 48 matches without defeat from 1963 to 1965. The longer period required for Benfica to achieve this record compared to Leverkusen's Bayer can be attributed to the fact that modern teams play significantly more matches per season than they did 60 years ago.
