Belgium Launches Probe After Drones Fly Over Sensitive NATO Airbase
Belgian authorities are investigating the appearance of several drones over the Kleine-Brogel air base, which is used by NATO and where, according to unconfirmed reports, American nuclear weapons are stored.
The Gaze reports on it, referring to Die Zeit and Reuters.
The incident occurred in northeastern Belgium, where drones were spotted flying over the Kleine-Brogel air base. Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken said that the drone detection system had been activated, but attempts to intercept them were unsuccessful.
The police have already launched an investigation to identify the drone operators and determine the potential threat.
This base is strategically important for NATO. It was here that training in the use of nuclear weapons was conducted with the participation of 2,000 military personnel, and Kleine-Brogel is considered one of the possible storage sites for American nuclear ammunition in Europe. Because of this, the drone incident has caused particular concern among Belgian and NATO security agencies.
The Belgian government plans to hold a meeting with the police and military to analyze the threat and strengthen security measures.
Official representatives emphasize that the incident cannot be considered a coincidence, as the flight path of the drones indicates a deliberate action aimed at observing or testing the base's defense capabilities.
"It was not a simple overflight, but a clear command targeting Kleine Brogel," Francken said.
As The Gaze reported earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned that Russia is waging a “hybrid war” against Europe, pointing to a surge in drone incursions and other covert operations targeting EU member states.
