Car Drives Into Crowd and Kills Five People at Christmas Market in Germany
A Ukrainian woman is among the five victims of a car attack on a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg, Suspilne reports, citing the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry.
The woman is in serious condition in a German hospital. The Embassy of Ukraine in Germany and Ukrainian consuls are in touch with the clinic and are providing the necessary assistance.
On the evening of 20 December, a car ploughed into a crowd of people at a Christmas market in Magdeburg at high speed. The spokesman for the Saxony-Anhalt government, Matthias Schuppe, said it was a deliberate attack.
Five people were killed, including a nine-year-old child. More than 200 people were injured. According to the representative of the city of Magdeburg, Ronny Krug, approximately 41 of the wounded have serious or critical injuries.
An investigation is underway into the detained driver, a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian citizen and psychiatrist. He has lived in Germany for almost two decades and was arrested at the scene. The police did not name the suspect. German media identified him as Taleb A.
Posts on the suspect's X social media account indicate that he supported anti-Islamic and far-right parties, including the Alternative for Germany (AfD), and criticised Germany for its treatment of Saudi refugees.
