Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has named Chrystia Freeland as Canada’s Special Representative for Ukraine’s Reconstruction, shortly after she stepped down from her cabinet post.

The Gaze reports this, referring to Carney’s statement on social media.

Carney praised Freeland’s “extraordinary service” in the federal government over the past decade and said her new assignment would be in addition to her work as a member of parliament.

The prime minister emphasized that Freeland’s experience as G7 Minister of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and International Trade, combined with her long-standing ties to Ukraine and deep knowledge of its economy, make her uniquely suited for the role.

He described the appointment as timely and vital for supporting “a better future for Ukrainians and peace in Europe.”

“Thank you, Chrystia, for your dedication, many contributions to Canada, friendship, and continued partnership,” Carney added.

Earlier on Tuesday, Freeland announced her resignation as Canada’s Minister of Transport and Internal Trade and confirmed she would not seek re-election.

Freeland, who has Ukrainian origins, has been one of the most influential figures in Canadian politics since the Liberals came to power in 2015.

She made history as the country’s first female finance minister under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, later serving as deputy prime minister.

She resigned from government in December 2024 after policy differences with Trudeau over relations with the United States.

Following the Liberals’ electoral victory under Carney in March 2025, she returned to cabinet to oversee transport and domestic trade.

As The Gaze previously reported, in September, Ukraine is set to receive more than 1 billion Canadian dollars’ worth of weapons from Canada, including drones, ammunition, and armored vehicles.
