Coalition in Romania Sets Dates for Presidential and Parliamentary Elections
Romania's ruling coalition today agreed on the dates for the country's parliamentary and presidential elections, Digi24 reports.
After lengthy preliminary consultations, Romanian parliamentarians met on Thursday morning to finalise the voting dates and decided that the first round of the presidential election will take place on 24 November, with a second round to be held on 8 December if necessary.
The parliamentary elections will be held between these two dates, on 1 December. Thus, Romania will have elections on three consecutive weekends.
During the discussion, the option of combining voting in the parliamentary and presidential elections was considered, but in the end, MPs settled on three separate dates.
The official government decision on the election dates will be agreed this week.
Romania's Social Democrats and Liberals are expected to remain coalition partners after the elections, although they will have separate candidates for the presidency.
In the European Parliament elections, they ran with joint lists and received 48.6% of the vote.
