Denmark on Reparations Loan : Discussion Continues, Decision May Be Made Next Week
It is a European responsibility to provide funding for Ukraine.
The GazIe reports on it according to Ukrinform.
The Danish Presidency of the EU Council continues to insist that a reparations loan to Ukraine guaranteed by frozen Russian assets is the best option for financing Ukraine's critical needs in 2026-2027.
This was announced by Danish Minister of Economy Stephanie Lose before the start of the EU Economic and Financial Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
"Yesterday we had a very important dinner with ministers to discuss new funding for Ukraine. It is very important that we make progress on this issue. Europe's security is linked to what is happening in Ukraine. It is a strong European responsibility to provide new funding for Ukraine," the minister said.
She noted that the Council is focusing on the financial details of the proposal, the issues of guarantees and how the loan will actually work.
‘There are still some concerns that need to be addressed, ... so naturally the discussion continues, but we will continue to work on clarifying all the elements and hope that we can pave the way for a decision at the EU Council next week. Doing nothing is not an option,’ Lose emphasised.
The minister said that yesterday's informal dinner discussion showed broad support for the fact that the European Commission ‘has made a lot of effort to reassure countries and explain the specifics of the loan.’
The parties also discussed how national guarantees against possible risks would affect the national deficit, as well as other technical details.
‘It is no secret that since Denmark's presidency, we have considered the reparation loan proposal to be the best option, as it does not place a burden on countries' public finances or public debt levels. So this is the way forward that will really work,’ Lose said.
