Estonian PM and German Opposition Leader Arrive in Kyiv
On 9 December, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal and German opposition leader and chancellorial candidate of the conservative CDU/CSU bloc Friedrich Merz arrived in Kyiv on a visit.
Michal wrote about this on the social network X, and also Deutsche Welle reported about it.
Michal noted that he would meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, and Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk.
The Prime Minister stressed that supporting Ukraine to victory will remain Estonia's priority, and the country will not make any concessions. ‘Ukraine's victory is a victory for Europe, the United States and the entire democratic world,’ he added.
On the same day, the leader of the German opposition, a candidate for chancellor from the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, Friedrich Merz, arrived in Kyiv.
Immediately upon arrival at the Kyiv railway station, Merz stated that he had come to ‘learn about the current state of defence’ in Ukraine. He said he was ‘looking forward’ to meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his visit.
‘And I just want to find out today what the situation is in Ukraine and what we can do to help this affected country continue its defence against Russian aggression,’ the Christian Democrat leader said.
He assured that the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction in the Bundestag ‘stands firmly’ on the side of Ukraine. ‘We want this terrible war to end as soon as possible and peace to be restored in Europe,’ Merz said.
